The sizing of a ring to best fit your finger is done right in our store. For many reasons fingers can become smaller or larger and joints change with afflictions like arthritis. Weinstein Jewelers can alter the size of almost any item to better fit you.
Enlarged Joints and Ring Sizing
As we age, people can develop arthritic problems and simple ring sizing is not always the best solution. We have different “sizing assistants” that will allow you to wear your rings even if you have moderate to severe arthritis. One type of “sizing assistant” is a special shank that opens like a hinge to go over an enlarged knuckle, then closes and locks to fit the base of your finger. In these severe cases your finger actually has two sizes — one for the knuckle and the other for where the ring rests on your finger. Our highly educated sales staff can assist you to find the perfect solution for your sizing needs.
How Rings are made Larger or Smaller
When a ring is sized larger, we add a slightly oversized piece of the same metal to build up the size and to make sure the shank is not weakened in the process. An oversized piece is necessary because to make the ends fit properly some filing and polishing is needed. When making a ring smaller, we remove a portion of your ring and seamlessly weld the cut with the same karat metal as the ring. When complete, neither process will be visible or in any way weaken the ring. This is one of the most common services we perform at Weinstein Jewelers.
Very Thin or Worn Rings
In some cases, the bottom portion of the ring (called the shank) becomes very worn and thin. This can also happen when an inexperienced jeweler tries to resize a ring and has filed down or polished away too much metal. We’ve had customers bring us their rings where this has happened at another store and ask what can be done. The remedy, in most cases, is rather simple. Depending upon how severe the shank is worn, we may need to replace it with a half-, quarter-, or even full-sized shank. In many cases the new shank is a machine die-stuck band that has been compressed and is actually stronger than the original shank and even stronger than the rest of your ring.
Reforming Solid Forged Bands
If the ring is a solid band and is heavy enough, we also offer a reforming technique. This technique is only recommended if the ring will not appear thinner when finished, and if the band was a solid die-struck style rather than a cast style. Some clients prefer this when the ring has been blessed during a marital ceremony as the ring does not have to be cut to make it slightly larger or smaller.
Removing Rings
Sometimes, as fingers or joints grow, or due to an accident and swelling, a ring will not come off your finger no matter what you do. For example, if you are admitted to a hospital they may need to cut the ring off your finger. The process they use is rather crude and in many cases can be painful and destroy your ring(s). At Weinstein Jewelers we offer a better solution. We have a special tool that allows us to painlessly cut the shank and then gently separate it so that it can be removed from your finger. By using this process, resizing can be done without affecting the integrity of the metal. In severe cases, we’ll use this tool at two points so the ring does not have to be pulled open to be removed. We perform ring removal at no cost, and it only takes a few minutes. Having this procedure performed by our jewelers allows you to leave your valuable rings at home prior to being admitted to a hospital.
Pricing – What Does it Cost?
Prices vary depending on what type of metal, band width, whether or not the ring has stones, etc., but free estimates are always available upon request.
We’ll Make it Right
We proudly stand behind all our ring sizing. If, after we size your ring, it doesn’t fit perfectly we will re-size it at no additional charge.
Class Rings
We also specialize in sizing class rings. Class rings are typically extra-thick and if not sized properly stones or other customized portions of an individual class ring can be damaged. We have the tools and expertise to properly size class rings.
Which Type of Rings can be Sized?
Rings made of sterling silver (as long as it is not platted to be tarnish free), yellow gold, white gold, palladium and platinum, can be sized.
Ring Sizing Guarantee
We offer a 30 day guarantee on our resizing service. If the ring doesn’t fit properly within 30 days from the date of delivery we will resize the ring at no additional charge. This guarantee is only offered if one of our expert sales staff or jeweler has sized your finger. If the customer chooses their own size we do not offer this guarantee.
